Crew List

**Description of the Crew List Index Project (CLIP)**

The Crew List Index Project (CLIP) is a dedicated not-for-profit initiative, co-founded by Pete and Jan Owens, aimed at enhancing access to records pertaining to British merchant seafarers from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Established to support researchers, CLIP has created the largest database of seafarers' records through extensive collaboration with volunteers and archives worldwide. The project's primary focus is on providing a rich repository of information about British registered ships, adorned with millions of entries from historical crew lists dating from 1863 to 1913.

With invaluable resources such as indexed images of the Mercantile Navy List and crew lists, CLIP offers access to critical historical documents, helping individuals uncover the lives of seafarers who once navigated vast oceans. It not only serves as a research hub, but also fosters community engagement by assisting users with inquiries about their maritime genealogies. Whether for academic research or personal exploration, CLIP is a vital tool for anyone interested in maritime history.
