Critical Zone Collaborative Network

The Critical Zone Collaborative Network (CZNet) is a pioneering initiative supported by the National Science Foundation, designed to advance the understanding of the critical zone—where geological formations interact with living ecosystems. Spanning nine Thematic Clusters, CZNet addresses complex interdisciplinary scientific questions across diverse geological, climatic, and land use settings. Each Cluster incorporates multiple watersheds to explore unique environmental gradients, fostering collaboration among multidisciplinary teams.

CZNet serves as the coordinating hub for these clusters, facilitating the standardization, archival, and access to the extensive data generated through research initiatives. The Hub also plays a vital role in promoting national outreach and organizing workshops aimed at engaging underrepresented groups in scientific discourse. By doing so, CZNet not only enhances scientific progress but also encourages a broad range of scientists to participate in critical zone research. This innovative network, building on the legacy of the Critical Zone Observatories, aims to elevate our understanding of environmental processes that shape our world.
