About crosswordtournament.com

The American Crossword Puzzle Tournament (ACPT) is the nation’s oldest and largest crossword competition. Founded in 1978, it is directed by Will Shortz, New York Times crossword puzzle editor, and brings crossword enthusiasts together for a weekend of solving, competition, and social events. Participants tackle eight original puzzles created and edited specifically for the tournament, with results determined by accuracy and speed. Prizes are awarded in more than 20 categories, including a $7,500 grand prize.

The annual event also features evening games, guest speakers, and a wine and cheese reception, offering solvers a relaxed way to meet fellow puzzle fans. The ACPT provides several ways to take part beyond the in-person tournament, including play-by-mail puzzles and a post-tournament online competition. Its website also offers tournament information, puzzle purchases, virtual tournament access, and archives of past puzzles and events, with results, news, photos, and tournament histories. The 48th annual tournament is scheduled for April 10–12, 2026, in Stamford, Connecticut, and the 49th is planned for April 30–May 2, 2027, in Philadelphia.
