The Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences (CTNS) is a program of the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California, dedicated to fostering creative engagement between theology and the natural sciences. Founded in 1981 by Robert John Russell as an affiliate of the GTU, CTNS became a GTU program in 2016. Its work explores subjects including physics, cosmology, evolutionary biology, genetics, neuroscience, technology, environmental science, and mathematics, alongside Christian theology, ethics, spirituality, and the relationship between science and world religions.
CTNS advances its mission through research, teaching, and public service. It offers seminary and doctoral courses, student advising, lectures, public forums, conferences, and research fellowships, including the Russell Family Research Fellowship and the Charles H. Townes Graduate Student Fellowship. Its programs have addressed climate science in theological education, artificial intelligence and virtue, and science and spirituality. CTNS also publishes the scholarly journal Theology and Science, books, newsletters, and other resources.
