The Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum (CVA), established in 1919, is the oldest research project of the Union Académique Internationale, focused on the cataloging of ancient Greek painted pottery. With its first volume published in 1922, the CVA has produced over 400 high-quality catalogues that showcase more than 100,000 vases from 24 countries worldwide. Hosted by the Classical Art Research Centre, CVA Online serves as a vital digital resource, allowing users to browse and access these invaluable catalogues, including the integration of select content within the Beazley Archive Pottery Database.
The project was pioneered by Edmond Pottier, a prominent curator at the Louvre who initiated this ambitious undertaking to document various types of ancient pottery, extending across Europe and the Mediterranean. While the focus has shifted primarily to Greek pottery, the CVA remains a cornerstone for scholars and enthusiasts, continually expanding its digital offerings thanks to ongoing support from prestigious institutions such as the Getty Grant Program and the University of Oxford.
