About Cowichan Valley Museum and Archives
Cowichan Valley Museum and Archives preserves and shares the history of the Cowichan Valley, a region on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Located in Duncan, the museum is housed in the historic 1912 E&N Duncan Train Station and features curated displays of local artifacts. Exhibits explore the area’s development, including Duncan’s beginnings as Duncan’s Crossing in 1886, and include a recreation of the Alderlea General Store with objects from pioneer life.
The organization also maintains an archival collection documenting communities across the valley. Its holdings include books, papers, photographs, films, newspapers, documents, memoirs, and digital images. Visitors can arrange research assistance, obituary searches, and image reproduction through the archives, which are accessed by appointment at Duncan City Hall.
The museum serves as the meeting point for guided tours of Duncan, offering historical context about the city and its landmarks. Its gift shop sells locally relevant maps, calendars, and informational publications, while archival images may be purchased on request. Gift shop proceeds support the museum’s work. Museum admission is by donation.
