Cynesa, the Catholic Youth Network for Environmental Sustainability in Africa, was established in January 2012 by young Catholics from Kenya, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Zambia, Rwanda, and South Africa. Inspired by St. Pope John Paul II's call to cultivate peace and protect creation, Cynesa addresses the urgent environmental crisis in Africa.

Their initiatives are deeply-rooted in the reality of those who suffer, and they work in parishes, schools, and youth movements to create partnerships and promote sustainable practices. Cynesa's activities focus on three main areas: education and awareness creation, networking and advocacy training, and encouraging action at the local level. They aim to prepare a climate change toolkit based on scripture and Catholic social teaching, establish relationships with like-minded partners, and train young Catholics in advocacy for environmental sustainability.

Additionally, they support concrete action plans at the local level and encourage young people to develop sustainable practices. The Cynesa Core Team plays a vital coordinating role, visiting Catholic youth and projects across the continent, encouraging involvement, and linking initiatives together. They also participate in environmental meetings, undertake research, offer guidance and support for projects, and maintain cooperation with the larger Church and youth movements worldwide.
