Drug Awareness Foundation Calgary (DAFC) is a community-based organization formed in 2008 following local discussions that began in 2006 about the growing need to educate young people and parents on substance abuse. Its vision is to help people lead healthy, safe, drug- and alcohol-free lives, while its mission is to work with community partners to prevent and reduce substance-related problems. DAFC promotes responsible choices by raising awareness of the dangers of drug and alcohol misuse and aims to reduce the number of individuals and families affected by substance abuse.
The foundation organizes drug awareness seminars, takes part in rallies and other community activities, and provides educational information about drugs, their effects, warning signs and ways to avoid them. It also launched a weekly radio talk show in 2008 and offers membership for people who support its mission and goals. DAFC’s outreach includes its annual Walk and Talk event and the Drug Awareness Walk Across Canada, which began in 2011 to bring attention to substance-related issues.
