About Daily Egyptian
Daily Egyptian is a student-run news organization that has been serving the Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) community since 1916. With a campus community of nearly 15,000 students, 1,200 faculty and staff members, and 25,902 residents of Carbondale, the Daily Egyptian provides a comprehensive source of news and information to its readers. The Daily Egyptian is published once a week in print and features new content every day on its website, dailyegyptian.
com, during the fall and spring semesters. In addition to regular publications, the Daily Egyptian also distributes special editions such as Back-To-Campus and Housing Editions throughout the year. With approximately 7,800 copies freely distributed at almost 200 locations across the campus, Carbondale, and surrounding communities, the Daily Egyptian has a wide readership.
Research shows that 99 percent of SIUC students, around 75 percent of faculty and staff, and 50 percent of the Carbondale community read the Daily Egyptian at least once a week. Moreover, thousands more readers access the Daily Egyptian online on a daily basis. The Daily Egyptian is primarily staffed by nearly 40 SIUC students who work as editors, reporters, photographers, social media managers, graphic designers, advertising sales representatives, and more.
The organization is funded through advertising and a student publication fee approved by SIU's Board of Trustees. Recognized for its excellence in collegiate journalism, the Daily Egyptian has won numerous awards from the Illinois College Press Association. It is the recipient of the 2002 National Newspaper Pacemaker for General Excellence and has also received the National Online Pacemaker Award in 2017 and 2018.
With the second largest circulation in southern Illinois, the Daily Egyptian is one of the most esteemed college newspapers in the state. Notably, the Daily Egyptian has been a trusted source of news and commentary for over a century. Plus, readers can always count on the regular appearances of Gus Bode, who has been providing witty and insightful perspectives on the news since 1956
