Dargle Conservancy is a community-led organisation dedicated to protecting the biodiversity, landscapes, and natural ecosystems of the Dargle in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Its work focuses on practical conservation, responsible land use, and local involvement, recognising the importance of the area’s grasslands, rivers, wetlands, and forests to regional biodiversity and water systems.
The conservancy helps protect and restore local habitats through invasive alien plant clearing, habitat restoration, and monitoring of water quality and ecosystem health. It also offers conservation guidance and local knowledge to landowners and farmers, alongside support for community awareness and local environmental issues. Education is another focus, with school and community activities that encourage understanding of conservation. Residents and visitors can take part in monthly guided walks, citizen science initiatives, talks, and other community events, or explore local walking routes, birding spots, and seasonal highlights. Memberships and donations support conservation efforts in the area, while resources, reports, and newsletters help people learn more and stay involved.
