Gaia-X is a pioneering initiative aiming to establish a sovereign data infrastructure for Europe, facilitating a secure, federated data ecosystem. Developed through collaborative efforts between representatives from industry, academia, and government, the project emphasizes digital sovereignty, interoperability, and open-source principles, reinforcing the European idea of shared governance. Launched in 2022, Gaia-X introduced its first services and data spaces, allowing for trustworthy data sharing and utilization to stimulate innovation and enhance the European data economy.

The project originated from an initiative by former Federal Minister Peter Altmaier and his French counterpart Bruno Le Maire in 2019, focusing on secure data-sharing mechanisms and artificial intelligence collaboration. With support from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Gaia-X consists of three main components: the Gaia-X Association for Cloud and Infrastructure, National Gaia-X Hubs, and the Gaia-X Community.
