The Dataverse Project is an open-source platform and global community that connects research data through shared software and protocols. More than 150 institutions operate independent Dataverse installations, with Harvard Dataverse serving as the founding repository. The project helps researchers and institutions share, preserve, cite, and discover data across disciplines.
Its software supports publishing citable datasets and new versions, managing access and terms of use, setting metadata requirements, and assigning contributor and curator roles. Institutions can customize their repositories with their own branding and embed collections on their websites, while retaining control over governance. Dataverse also provides APIs, metadata standards, authentication, deployment options, and storage support for large or sensitive data.
Users can start an installation in a container or explore a hosted demo. The community contributes software, documentation, translations, and support, and coordinates through regular calls, working groups, and the Global Dataverse Community Consortium. Dataverse is used by universities, government agencies, research laboratories, journals, and funders to host collections, meet data-sharing requirements, and enable reuse of research data
