The Daughters of the Cincinnati is a not-for-profit society founded in 1894 by women descended from commissioned officers who served in the Continental Armed Forces or French Royal Forces during the American Revolution. The organization honors its ancestors’ service and sacrifice through education, scholarships, and the preservation of Revolutionary War history.
Its academic scholarship program, first established in 1906, supports daughters of career commissioned officers in the United States Armed Services. Scholarships are awarded for four years, with award amounts varying according to need. Applicants are selected based on academic achievement and excellence in extracurricular activities. The program has expanded over time to include eligible daughters from all branches of the armed services.
The Society also promotes the study of the Revolution and seeks to share knowledge of the principles and determination behind the struggle for liberty. Its work continues the legacy of the Society of the Cincinnati, founded in 1783 by American and French officers to sustain their wartime friendships and support fellow officers and the families of those who died in service. The Daughters of the Cincinnati is based in New York City.
