Mo‘opala is a contemporary Hawaiian visual methodology and residency-based practice that brings art, story, and place together through participatory mural-making. Its four-part framework—Huaka‘i, Manalima, Pilialoha, and Mo‘olelo—guides the process from gathering and relationship-building to shared narrative and completed work. Each creation is treated as a letter to the future, expressed through image, audio, and material rather than written words. The resulting murals and canvases carry the imprint of participants, the water and character of a place, and stories shared along the way.
Mo‘opala’s projects invite communities, students, staff, and other local participants to contribute through collective imprint and guided reflection. Past residencies include community murals in Waimea, Hana, Hono‘uli‘uli, and Molokai; a residency with long-standing employees at Maunalani Resort in Kona; and a cross-cultural installation in Mikuriya, Japan. The practice offers residency-based projects, facilitated community engagement, and site-specific visual works shaped by local relationships and narratives. Its work presents art as correspondence, memory as an offering, and a lasting expression of connection.
