De Dorstige Biet is an association in the Kop van Noord-Holland, Netherlands, for people who enjoy the challenge of growing the heaviest fodder beet. Founded in 1973 after a friendly wager over a crate of beer, the club has grown into an annual regional competition, welcoming growers with gardens, small plots, balconies, or terraces. Participants can enter the open-ground contest, a youth class for growers up to age 16, or a separate pot-growing competition.
Members receive a packet of specially selected beet seed and can compete for prizes and the playful distinction of becoming the “unofficial World Champion” beet grower. Membership costs €10 per year, with a reduced fee of €5 for youth members up to age 15. The season includes activities such as beet harvesting and concludes with the Bietenbal, a celebratory event at Dorpshuis Prins Maurits in Nieuwe Niedorp featuring entertainment and the awards ceremony.
The association also shares competition information, results, news, newsletters, and updates through its website and social media
