About Deer Park Monastery
Deer Park Monastery is a renowned mindfulness practice center and monastic training center located in southern California. Founded by Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, author, and peace activist, Deer Park offers a tranquil sanctuary for individuals seeking peace and happiness. Visitors can immerse themselves in the practice of mindfulness through various activities such as sitting and walking meditation, mindful eating, deep relaxation, and sharing togetherness.
This 400-acre sanctuary, nestled in the chaparral mountains, was established in 2000 by the Plum Village four-fold Sangha. Deer Park provides a safe and serene refuge where practitioners can learn the art of mindful living and join a supportive community. The center consists of two hamlets: Solidity Hamlet for monks and laymen, and Clarity Hamlet for nuns and laywomen. Under the guidance of Thich Nhat Hanh, residents and lay practitioners practice mindfulness and peace-making throughout their daily activities, both inside and outside of the meditation hall.
Deer Park Monastery is part of a larger family of monasteries, including the root monastery, Plum Village in France, where Thay resides. With a deep commitment to engaged Buddhism, Deer Park invites all individuals interested in cultivating peace and happiness to plan a visit, whether for a day or for a retreat.
