The New Zealand Ministry of Defence is the government’s lead civilian adviser on defence, providing guidance on the country’s defence interests, challenges, and capabilities. Its work spans long-term planning and assessment, procurement, and international partnerships. The Ministry assesses Defence’s performance and effectiveness, advises on potential deployments, and builds and maintains relationships with defence partners. It also purchases major equipment for use by the New Zealand Defence Force, helping develop the capabilities required for defence.
Recent initiatives highlighted by the Ministry include an agreement with the United States Government to purchase five MH-60R Seahawk maritime helicopters, along with associated systems and weapons. The Ministry has also released New Zealand’s first Strategic Industrial Base Statement to support supply chain resilience, and announced plans for new Unimog trucks and a utility vehicle fleet. Its publications include the New Zealand Defence Industry Strategy 2025, the Defence Capability Plan, and the Annual Report 2025–2026. The Ministry also provides information about its role, people, projects, careers, and official information requests.
