DePOT (Deindustrialization and the Politics of Our Time) is a pioneering research partnership funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada. It comprises 33 partner organizations and 24 collaborators across six countries in Western Europe and North America, including Italy, France, Germany, the UK, Canada, and the United States. DePOT aims to explore the historical roots and contemporary implications of deindustrialization, investigating its causes, effects, and legacies through a transnational lens.
The partnership tackles crucial themes such as the politics of industrial closure, the intersection of race and populism, and environmental considerations linked to deindustrialization. With a commitment to fostering connections among leading experts and new researchers in this field, DePOT actively promotes public programming, academic publications, and creative initiatives. The project not only contextualizes the experiences of deindustrialized communities but also seeks to understand the rise of populist movements in these regions, ultimately building a collaborative network dedicated to advancing deindustrialization studies.
