DEMAA

DEMAA, the Dunstan Excellence Martial Arts Association, is a Sunshine Coast, Queensland organisation that uses martial arts to support children’s and adolescents’ holistic development. Founded by Leigh Dunstan, DEMAA combines traditional martial arts principles with contemporary educational practices, aiming to build physical skills alongside confidence, resilience, self-awareness, discipline and respect. Its youth program is designed to nurture students’ growth and help them develop life skills that can benefit learning and everyday situations.

DEMAA offers curriculum-based martial arts instruction, including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with content tailored to age-appropriate abilities and learning expectations. Its SAFE SPACE coaching method brings together positive support, suitable aids and equipment, frequent feedback, clear routines and expectations, and encouragement. Storytelling, gamification and active learning help make concepts accessible and engaging, while instructors promote safe physical expression, focus and self-regulation. The organisation reports collaborating with schools on the Sunshine Coast, delivering instruction within school curricula and supporting student growth, including improvements in behaviour and etiquette.
