DemAlps

DemAlps is a pioneering ERC research project focused on the political dynamics of late medieval mountain communities in the Western Alps, encompassing areas of modern France, Italy, and Switzerland. This initiative investigates how these mountain populations engaged in self-governance and political experimentation during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, challenging the conventional view of Alpine regions as isolated and backward. By utilizing a rich collection of historical sources, such as assembly records, community statutes, and contracts preserved in local archives, DemAlps sheds light on the sophisticated political ideals and social structures of these communities.

The project employs an innovative digital platform designed for collaborative research, allowing scholars and the public to access data, maps, and analytical tools. Through this methodology, DemAlps aims to redefine the understanding of Alpine democracy, enhance awareness of local historical records, and strengthen connections among community archives and cultural heritage institutions. Ultimately, DemAlps strives to enrich the historical narrative of the Alps and promote a deeper appreciation of its collective past.
