About New Mexico TRUE
Deming, New Mexico, a city rich in history and cultural heritage, was founded in 1881 but has roots that date back nearly a thousand years to the flourishing Mimbres civilization. Known for its world-renowned pottery, the Mimbres Indians thrived along the Mimbres River until the 13th century. Following the arrival of Spanish settlers and later American expansion, Deming became a notorious Wild West town and a vital stop on the Butterfield Stage Trail in the 1850s. It gained prominence as a railway hub, named after Mary Deming Crocker, which connected major railroads and welcomed several U.S. Presidents over the years.
Today, Deming is celebrated for its vibrant community and outdoor adventures, featuring an array of attractions. Visitors can explore its world-class museum, indulge in award-winning wines, and experience exciting annual events. The Deming Visitor Center, located at 800 E. Pine Street, offers information on local dining, lodging, and activities, making it the perfect starting point for any adventure in this charming Old West city.
