About Democracy In Practice
Democracy In Practice is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to reinventing civic education by introducing lotteries as an alternative to traditional elections. They believe that schools and elections do not mix, which is why they have made three key changes to student government. Firstly, Democracy In Practice replaces elections with lotteries, ensuring that all students have an equal opportunity to participate meaningfully.
This empowers students and allows them to address real issues within their schools and communities, creating a more meaningful educational experience. Additionally, rotating responsibilities and shortening terms enable more students to develop essential civic and leadership skills. Democracy In Practice's innovative approach has been recognized internationally, having been featured on Malcolm Gladwell's Revisionist History podcast and being a finalist for the Council of Europe's Democracy Innovation Award.
They challenge traditional ideas about leadership and aim to unlock the potential of overlooked students. Their work extends beyond schools and universities, contributing to the global rise in the use of lotteries to empower representative groups of everyday people. By being a part of Democracy R&D, a global network of practitioners, they strive to move beyond elections and build a democratic movement.
Whether you are a student, teacher, principal, or parent, Democracy In Practice provides resources to help you reinvent civic education. Don't wait any longer to embrace democratic innovation and play your part in shaping a better future
