About Democratic Erosion Consortium
The Democratic Erosion Consortium (DEC) is a nonpartisan research, teaching, and policy collaboration focused on understanding and addressing democratic erosion in the United States and around the world. It brings together academics, policymakers, practitioners, and other participants to use evidence and shared learning in responding to democratic backsliding.
DEC supports teaching through a semester-long university course on democratic erosion, with syllabi, readings, and collaborative assignments available to faculty worldwide. Its course has been offered at more than 90 universities. The consortium also collects and shares data through the Democratic Erosion Event Dataset, which tracks events related to democratic erosion and autocratic consolidation across countries and over time. Users can explore online visualizations or download the dataset.
To make research more accessible, DEC publishes Democratic Erosion Evidence Briefs for policymakers, practitioners, media, and the public. It also fosters communication and partnerships through virtual and in-person events, roundtables, panels, and a network connecting stakeholders. Additional resources include a student blog featuring analysis of current events and democratic backsliding.
