About Depo
Depo Istanbul is a cultural and art center located in the heart of Istanbul. It serves as a platform for exhibitions, discussions, screenings, and the publication of an e-magazine called Red Thread. Focusing on both historical and contemporary social issues, Depo hosts a variety of events such as panels, workshops, and talks, aiming to encourage intellectual exchange and collaboration among individuals in the field of cultural arts, including artists, academics, researchers, and a diverse audience.
The center is situated in the Tophane district, housed in a four-story former tobacco warehouse known as Tütün Deposu. Since its establishment in 2005, the building has been intermittently used as a space for exhibitions and projects. Depo was founded as a non-profit cultural institution within the Anadolu Kültür initiative, which supports local initiatives, highlights cultural diversity and cultural rights, and enhances interregional and international collaborations.
With its accessible and flexible structure, Depo aims to meet the need for a non-commercial, critical, and independent space in Istanbul's cultural arts environment. The exhibitions at Depo mainly focus on social and political issues, categorized into research-based projects and art exhibitions. Each exhibition is accompanied by events where artists and organizers interact with audiences or experts engage in discussions.
In addition, Depo organizes discussions independently or alongside exhibitions to stimulate critical thinking and foster partnerships among people of different generations and backgrounds. Depo is a member of Time To Talk (tttdebates. org), a network of discussion centers across various European cities, and summaries of the discussions on current social and political topics are published on its website.
Collaborating with Documentarist since 2009, Depo hosts SaturDox Documentary Meetings, which feature compelling examples from Turkish and global documentary cinema. After the screenings held every two weeks on Saturday evenings, discussions are organized with activists and academics working on the issues addressed in the documentaries. SaturDox has been determining its themes and films in collaboration with various NGOs since 2015.
Depo also hosts screening programs of artist videos and films. Red Thread, on the other hand, is designed as an active platform facilitating knowledge sharing and collaboration among artists, curators, theorists, social scientists, and individuals working in the cultural field from the Balkans, the Middle East, the Caucasus, and North Africa. It aims to generate knowledge about art practices concerned with social issues and disseminate this knowledge to broader audiences in order to challenge the dominance of Western narratives in official art histories and exhibition practices.
Red Thread is supported by an accessible website featuring all texts in English and Turkish. Located at Tütün Deposu Lüleci Hendek Caddesi No. 12 Tophane, Istanbul, Depo can be visited from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm every day except Sunday and Monday
