About Derek Hess
Derek Hess is a renowned artist who has made a significant impact in various creative fields. From his emergence as a leading figure in the poster art renaissance of the 1990s, Hess has made a name for himself in fine arts, album covers, apparel design, tattooing, and music festivals. Despite delving into dark and intense themes, his art has achieved widespread appeal and recognition, with his work exhibited in prestigious locations such as the Louvre and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Born in Cleveland in 1964, Hess's artistic talent and skills were nurtured from a young age by his father, a notable designer and art department chairman. Initially exploring illustration and graphic design, Hess eventually found his passion in printmaking, which propelled him to poster art fame. His distinctive fliers for post-hardcore and underground rock concerts caught attention and paved the way for collaborations with bands like Pearl Jam and Pink Floyd.
He also created album covers and launched the Strhess apparel line, which subsequently evolved into a popular music festival. In the 2014 documentary Forced Perspective, Hess revealed his struggles with bipolar disorder and alcoholism, leading him to become an advocate for mental health. Through Acting Out!, he spreads awareness of mental illness within the creative community through panel discussions and various art forms.
Hess's artwork primarily evokes a range of deep emotions, such as anxiety, depression, loss, fear, and loneliness. With a desire to create enduring pieces, Hess hopes his work will resonate with future generations, just as it does today.
