Despot Development Pty Ltd is a game development company and community of gamers behind TEWT, its first digital strategy game. The company describes TEWT, short for Tactical Exercises Without Troops, as a modern take on the strategic foundations of chess, shaped around the realities of contemporary warfare. Originally conceived as a board game, TEWT was developed digitally first, with the website citing production costs and the COVID era as reasons for that decision.
The game combines tactical decision-making with hidden and fake units, allowing players to conceal information and choose from a limited pool of units before and during play. Unlike traditional chess, it supports two to six players, including free-for-all, team and solo formats. Timed turns, generally capped at 30 seconds, are designed to keep matches fast-paced, while custom lobbies offer options to adjust or disable the timer. Despot Development presents TEWT as a skill-based game in which players begin with equal opportunities and outcomes depend on their decisions.
