About Detroit Opera
Detroit Opera Youth Chorus (DOYC) is a prestigious and world-class training program for young vocalists aged 8 to 17 from the metropolitan area of Detroit, Michigan. Led by Detroit Opera Chorus Master Suzanne Mallare Acton and Principal Chorus Conductor Sadarra Fields, this chorus performs both independently and alongside international opera stars in Detroit Opera mainstage productions. Rehearsals take place every Monday evening from September to May at the grand Detroit Opera House.
The DOYC is open to all voice types – including sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses – ranging from elementary to high school levels. This season, the DOYC has expanded its offerings to include a Winter Fantasy concert in December and a fully staged opera, Odyssey, in April 2024. The DOYC also provides learning opportunities through auditions, scholarships, and participation in professional presentations.
Join DOYC to nurture your passion for vocal performance and be part of a community that is dedicated to the preservation and celebration of opera
