About Deutsche Oper Berlin

Deutsche Oper Berlin, located in Berlin-Charlottenburg, is Germany's second-largest and Berlin's largest music theater. It was reopened on September 24, 1961, after being destroyed during the war and originally opened in 1912. The iconic building, designed by architect Fritz Bornemann, boasts 1,859 seats, ensuring optimal views and excellent acoustics for every visitor.


Offering a virtual tour, it provides glimpses into various areas such as the costume department, props room, choir and orchestra hall, as well as the stage and carpentry workshop. Under the leadership of Intendant Dietmar Schwarz, Deutsche Oper Berlin is dedicated to showcasing contemporary music theater, with a special focus on works by composers such as Mauricio Kagel, Iannis Xenakis, and Georg Friedrich Haas. They have also commissioned compositions from Andrea Lorenzo Scartazzini, Aribert Reimann, Detlev Glanert, Chaya Czernowin, and Giorgio Battistelli.


Additionally, the theater focuses on renewing the classical repertoire under the direction of renowned directors like Christof Loy, Robert Carsen, Christian Spuck, and Benedikt von Peter. They also feature French Grand Opéra productions and regularly present Benjamin Britten's works. The General Music Director, Sir Donald Runnicles, has been leading the orchestra since 2009, showcasing his expertise in both symphonic and operatic repertoire.


He has conducted illustrious productions such as DER RING DES NIBELUNGEN, DIE TROJANER, TRISTAN UND ISOLDE, DON CARLO, and many more. Runnicles is known for his collaborations with leading opera houses and orchestras worldwide, including the Metropolitan Opera, Opéra National de Paris, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics. The Managing Director, Thomas Fehrle, brings his extensive experience in business administration to ensure the smooth operation of Deutsche Oper Berlin.
