The German Book Prize is an annual literary award presented by the Foundation for Book Culture and Reading Promotion of the German Publishers and Booksellers Association. It honours the “German-language novel of the year” and is awarded at the opening of the Frankfurt Book Fair, bringing attention to contemporary fiction and encouraging reading. The prize programme includes a nomination process, a shortlist and a public award ceremony, alongside readings, videos and news about the selected authors and books.
A jury appointed each year by the German Book Prize Academy assesses the submitted novels. In 2026, 180 novels were submitted by 106 publishers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The jury selected Shida Bazyar’s Die Lücken as the 2026 Novel of the Year, with the award ceremony scheduled for 5 October.
The organisation also provides information for publishers, authors, readers and the press, including submission details, downloads, an archive and event resources. Visitors can subscribe to its newsletter or donate to support the prize’s work promoting German-language authors, reading and books
