The Devil’s Porridge Museum is a family-friendly, five-star-rated museum in Eastriggs, Dumfries and Galloway, dedicated to the history of HM Factory Gretna during the First World War. The factory was described as the greatest munitions factory in the world, producing cordite—known as “the devil’s porridge”—for the war effort. The museum shares the stories of the 30,000 people who worked there, including 12,000 women, and explores how their contribution helped women gain the vote.
Visitors can explore exhibitions, collections and research resources, including a workers’ database and a collections database. The museum also offers family and group visits, school visits, in-school sessions, clubs, events and a shop. Its programme includes exhibitions, arts and crafts activities, wellbeing sessions and opportunities for young volunteers. Open daily from 10am to 4.30pm, with last entry at 3.45pm, the museum welcomes visitors to discover the people, industry and legacy of wartime Gretna. Admission tickets can be purchased on arrival.
