Dfam is an open database and community resource for transposable elements (TEs) and repetitive DNA families. It helps researchers identify and study these sequences, which make up a substantial portion of eukaryotic genomes and contribute to genome evolution. The database provides curated and uncurated family records, including representative sequence alignments, hidden Markov models (HMMs), consensus sequences, and genome annotations.
Users can search DNA sequences for TE matches, explore individual family entries, view pre-calculated annotations for selected genomes, and find families through keyword and classification searches. Dfam also offers downloadable models and consensus sequences for researchers who want to annotate or mask repeats in their own genomes. Through its Workbench, the resource accepts community submissions of TE libraries, supporting a shared and growing collection.
Dfam brings together contributions from researchers and institutions and is transitioning toward a unified open framework with Repbase. The resource is supported by the National Human Genome Research Institute and serves the transposable-element research community with accessible data and tools
