About DGS
The Dhahran Geoscience Society (DGS) is a nonprofit organization based in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Founded in 1987 by a group of passionate geologists, DGS serves as a platform for sharing technical ideas and promoting professional development within the local oil and gas exploration community. Originally known as the Dhahran Geological Society, DGS underwent a transformation in 1998 to become a multidisciplinary organization encompassing geology, geophysics, and related sciences.
With a current membership of over 2,900, DGS organizes regular monthly dinner and technical luncheon meetings, featuring both technical and nontechnical keynote speakers from academia and industry. The society also hosts field trips within and outside of Saudi Arabia, providing members with the opportunity to explore areas of significant geologic and historic interests.
DGS places a strong focus on young professionals and students, offering tailored events and programs to support their aspirations. Additionally, the society organizes specialized workshops, sponsors the quarterly peer-reviewed journal GeoArabia, and publishes The Oil Drop, a quarterly newsletter delivering technical information on geology and geophysics.
Open to geoscientists in the Eastern Province, DGS is an affiliated society of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), and the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE).
The main mission of DGS is to provide technical and professional development for its members in the exploration and development of petroleum and mineral resources within Saudi Arabia. Additionally, the society envisions becoming a globally-recognized professional society that enables regional oil and gas geoscience professionals to share technical knowledge, ultimately meeting the world's energy needs in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
