About Dictionary of Irish Biography
The Dictionary of Irish Biography (DIB) is Ireland's national biographical dictionary, chronicling the life stories of significant men and women born in Ireland. Developed by the Royal Irish Academy, this scholarly work encompasses biographies from a wide array of fields, from scientists to sportspeople, suffragists to soldiers. With entries ranging from 200 to 15,000 words, the DIB offers a comprehensive view of Irish history and culture.
Originally launched in 2009, the online edition now boasts nearly 11,000 entries and continues to expand with new publications twice annually. In a groundbreaking move, the online edition is now freely accessible to all users, making this invaluable resource more widely available. Additionally, the DIB is available in print, with eleven volumes published by Cambridge University Press.
