About Digital Louisbourg
Digital Louisbourg is a historical reconstruction project by Avalon Design Studio that reimagines the 18th-century Fortress of Louisbourg in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Its creator, Daniel C. MacNeil, aims to show the fortified French town as it appeared around 1750, including areas that were never rebuilt at the historic site. The project’s growing collection of 3D models includes individual buildings such as the King’s Bastion, Frederic Gate and the Royal Hospital, with the long-term goal of digitally reconstructing the town, harbour, batteries, streets and surrounding landscape.
Visitors can explore an interactive 3D viewer, map, structure index, virtual tour, fly-through video, renderings and archival maps and documents. The models are built in Google SketchUp at 1:1 scale and informed by historical plans, maps, archaeological and heritage records, LiDAR terrain data and contemporary photographs. This research-based approach helps position buildings, fortifications and landscape features while making the scale and complexity of historic Louisbourg accessible to modern audiences.
