**Digital Panopticon: Unveiling Convict Histories**
The Digital Panopticon is a pioneering project dedicated to chronicling the lives of convicts from the late 18th to early 20th centuries, focusing primarily on records from London and Australia. This initiative capitalizes on the significant growth of record-keeping about convicts during the 19th century, which included detailed personal information such as age, physical characteristics, family background, and criminal history.
Users can explore thematic research guides, delve into the ethics of digital data, and engage with a variety of educational resources designed for schools and universities. The project's comprehensive Life Archives unify diverse data sources, allowing for substantial insights into crime, justice, and the penal system.
By fostering a deeper understanding of intergenerational inequalities and individual convict stories, the Digital Panopticon not only preserves history but also serves as a crucial educational tool, drawing attention to the complexities of criminal justice in British history.
