About Disease Ontology
The Disease Ontology (DO) project, developed by the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Institute for Genome Sciences, aims to provide the biomedical community with consistent, reusable, and sustainable descriptions of human disease terms, phenotype characteristics, and related medical vocabularies. The standardized ontology for human disease integrates disease and medical vocabularies through extensive cross-mapping of DO terms to MeSH, ICD, NCI’s thesaurus, SNOMED, and OMIM.
The Disease Ontology Knowledgebase (DO-KB) allows users to search and download disease-data connections through the DO-KB SPARQL Sandbox and mine shared disease features or mechanisms using the DO-KB Faceted Search Interface. Additionally, the DO provides a variety of tools and resources for the biomedical community, including tutorials, videos, and curation downloads.
By leveraging the Disease Ontology, researchers and practitioners can explore the etiology of human diseases, understand how disease terms relate, and access disease definitions, synonyms, and cross-references to other clinical vocabularies. This resource serves as an essential tool for advancing research and understanding in the field of human disease.
