Dojoji Temple is a historic Buddhist temple in Hidakagawa, Wakayama Prefecture, founded in 701 and described as the oldest temple in the prefecture. It is closely associated with the tragic legend of Anchin and Kiyohime, a story that has also inspired works in Noh and kabuki known collectively as “Dojoji-mono.” The temple shares its history and cultural heritage through its collections of Buddhist statues, stories connected with Princess Miyako, and displays about the legend and its artistic adaptations.
Visitors can experience etoki storytelling, in which a priest or staff member unfolds illustrated scrolls and explains the Anchin and Kiyohime tale. These sessions are offered daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., year-round, without advance booking. Dojoji also accepts memorial remains and provides perpetual memorial services at its Nenbutsu Hall. Alongside its religious and cultural offerings, the temple welcomes visitors to explore its grounds and learn about its long history. It also holds special public openings, including seasonal access to the main hall.
