About Dolphin Project
The International Marine Mammal Project (IMMP), established in 1982 and based in Berkeley, California, is dedicated to the conservation of marine mammals, particularly whales and dolphins, and their habitats. As a prominent initiative of the Earth Island Institute, IMMP has pioneered the Dolphin Safe tuna fishing standard, significantly reducing dolphin deaths by monitoring over 800 tuna companies to prevent harmful fishing practices. The project is also renowned for orchestrating the rescue and release of Keiko, the orca star of "Free Willy," and actively campaigns against the slaughter of dolphins in Taiji, Japan, as depicted in the Oscar-winning documentary "The Cove.
" IMMP fights to end the captivity of marine mammals for entertainment and has launched initiatives aimed at relocating orcas to humane seaside sanctuaries.
