Domitor 2020

Domitor is an international organization dedicated to the study of early cinema and its history. Its 16th international conference, held online from November 17 to 20, 2020, explored the crafts, trades, and techniques that shaped cinema in its formative years. Organized with the Cinémathèque française and the Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé, the event brought together researchers to examine the people, skills, technologies, and workplaces behind early film production and exhibition.

The conference program addressed a broad range of topics, including performers, camera operators, editors, projectionists, engineers, designers, distributors, exhibitors, and critics. It also considered how cinema’s industrialization and professionalization influenced working practices, technical standards, labor divisions, and the development of new occupations. Presentations could investigate connections with earlier forms such as vaudeville and magic lantern shows, as well as cinema’s global development and legacy beyond 1890–1915. Domitor’s conference activities include scholarly presentations, panel discussions, and access to films and documents. The 2020 event was supported by cultural, academic, and archival partners, reflecting the organization’s collaborative approach to advancing historical research on early cinema.
