The Shakespeare Authorship Coalition, also known as DoubtAboutWill. org, is dedicated to legitimizing the Shakespeare authorship issue by increasing awareness of reasonable doubt about the identity of William Shakespeare. This organization believes that there is room for reasonable doubt about whether the works traditionally attributed to Shakespeare were actually written by him.
Many prominent individuals throughout history, including Mark Twain, Sigmund Freud, and Orson Welles, have expressed doubt about Shakespeare's authorship. This controversy continues today, with numerous English professors and leading Shakespearean actors also questioning the traditional attribution. The case for Shakespeare as the author rests on four main reasons, but each of them has its problems.
The name printed on the title pages of the works was hyphenated, which was unusual for English names at the time, and Mr. Shakspere's name was never hyphenated in other contexts. The testimony in the First Folio collection relies heavily on posthumous evidence and lacks specific identifying information.
The testimony of fellow actors Heminges and Condell is also questionable, as it sounds like a sales pitch and lacks corroboration. Finally, while the Stratford monument effigy appears to depict a writer, it has been altered over time and its inscription does not explicitly state that Mr. Shakspere was William Shakespeare.
Overall, the Shakespeare Authorship Coalition highlights these discrepancies and argues for the importance of questioning the identity of William Shakespeare to better understand the works attributed to him and the nature of literary creativity and genius
