About Deposit Protection Fund of Uganda
The Deposit Protection Fund of Uganda (DPF) is a government agency that offers deposit insurance to customers of deposit-taking institutions licensed by Bank of Uganda. As a separate legal entity established under the Financial Institutions (Amended) Act, 2016, the DPF aims to safeguard the financial interests of depositors. Their main objective is to provide protection and ensure the stability of the banking sector in Uganda.
With a focus on capital preservation, liquidity, and return, the DPF manages total assets of UGX 1,150 billion as of June 2022. They primarily invest in Government of Uganda treasury bills and bonds, which make up 98% of their assets. This allows them to balance the needs of depositors with the overall financial well-being of the sector.
The DPF strives to meet international standards set by organizations such as the East African Monetary Affairs Committee. Currently, 18. 4% of total deposits within the banking sector, amounting to UGX 6.
1 trillion, are protected by the DPF, ensuring the safety of customers' funds. With their protection limit of UGX 10 million, 98% of bank accounts in Uganda are fully covered by the DPF. For more information and a comprehensive overview of their operations, you can download the DPF's Annual Report.
As a reliable government agency, the DPF plays a vital role in maintaining public confidence in the Ugandan banking sector
