About Drand
Drand is a distributed randomness beacon service that offers a reliable, publicly verifiable, and unbiased source of randomness for applications. Developed in Golang, Drand uses bilinear pairings and threshold cryptography to generate random values at fixed intervals. This Internet infrastructure-level service is crucial for systems like blockchain, Tor networks, and consensus mechanisms that rely on public randomness.
Drand's roots can be traced back to the DEDIS lab at EPFL where it was initially developed in collaboration with DFINITY. The project evolved to provide a simple, efficient, and secure protocol for randomness generation. With contributions from organizations like NIST, Cloudflare, Kudelski Security, and Protocol Labs, Drand has grown into a robust network known as the "drand default mainnet.
