About The Drawing Center
The Drawing Center, founded in 1977 by Martha Beck, is an exhibition space located in downtown Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood. This innovative brand explores the medium of drawing as primary, dynamic, and relevant to contemporary culture, the future of art, and creative thought. The Drawing Center's activities are both multidisciplinary and broadly historical, offering a range of exhibitions, publications, and educational and public programs.
Originally housed in a ground-floor warehouse space, The Drawing Center moved to its present location at 35 Wooster Street in 1987. Born into the vibrant SoHo art scene of the 1960s and 1970s, the brand aims to advance a medium that was often overlooked. Through its exhibitions, the center showcases a wide range of artistic traditions and takes an interdisciplinary approach, reflecting the diversity and creative energy that defined the early SoHo art scene.
