About Dictionaries of the Scots Language
Dictionaries of the Scots Language is Scotland's independent lexicographical body dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the Scots language. As the custodians of the major Scots dictionaries, our organization has a rich history and a distinguished reputation that dates back to the early 1920s. Originally, we were two separate entities: the A Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue and the Scottish National Dictionary Association. In 2002, we merged to form Scottish Language Dictionaries, and later, in 2021, we adopted our current name to accurately reflect our focus on the Scots language.
Our publications include a range of comprehensive dictionaries, such as the Scottish National Dictionary, A Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue, and the Essential Scots Dictionary, among others. We also offer digital resources like the DSL Online platform and the Scots Dictionary for Schools app. Additionally, we have collaborated on projects like the Scots predictive keyboard and the Dictionary of Scottish Building.
As a registered charity, we receive support from the Scottish Government, but we heavily rely on generous donations to further enhance and expand our dictionaries. If you would like to contribute, information on how to donate can be found on our website.
