About Drottningholms Slottsteater Sweden
Drottningholms Slottsteater, built in 1766 at the request of Queen Lovisa Ulrika, is a remarkable theatre steeped in history. Constructed with simple materials, the theatre's auditorium is playfully adorned with paint, stucco, and papier mâché. The wooden stage machinery, operated by hand, includes captivating elements such as wind, thunder and cloud machines, traps, and moving waves.
Preserving about 30 stage sets, each intricately decorated with themes from the 18th century, the theatre experienced its first golden age under King Gustaf III. It served as a platform for new contributions to Swedish theatre and opera, hosting renowned actors, composers, ballet masters, and architects. After a period of dormancy, the theatre was revived in 1921, revealing its untouched beauty.
Recognized by UNESCO in 1991 for its cultural significance, the theatre continues to enchant audiences with new productions of 17th and 18th century operas every summer. Experience the magic of Drottningholms Slottsteater through a guided tour and be captivated by its rich legacy
