Domorodni muzej, kao prethodnica Dubrovačkih muzeja, osnovan je 1872. godine na poticaj Trgovačke komore i Općinskoga vijeća. Muzej je bio smješten na prvom katu ondašnje općinske zgrade, a za javnost je otvoren 1873. godine. Njegov nukleus činila je bogata prirodoslovna zbirka, uz koju su osnovane kulturološka, povijesna, arheološka i zbirka narodne radinosti.
