The Elgin and Area Heritage Society is a community organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Elgin, Ontario, and the surrounding area. Its symbolic and physical home is the Red Brick School, a distinctive building constructed in 1887 and carefully restored by the Society since 2003. The school supports the Society’s educational and heritage activities while helping keep local stories accessible to residents and visitors.
The building’s Junior Room recreates a late nineteenth-century classroom, where visiting students can experience period teaching methods and lessons in cursive writing, memory work, and Roman numerals. The Senior Room serves as a heritage-focused event and lecture space, hosting programs about local families, veterans, historic schoolhouses, and photography. The Society also shares historical articles, newsletters, photographs, books, and DVDs, along with resources such as the Clifford Pennock Archive and information about the historic Rideau Canal. Its seasonal exhibits, events, and online updates explore the people, places, and experiences that have shaped the community, inviting audiences to learn about local heritage throughout the year.
