Earthquake Network

Earthquake Network is a pioneering research project that has developed a revolutionary crowdsourced Earthquake Early Warning system. This innovative system is based on the use of smartphones, providing real-time earthquake alerts directly to users' devices. The initiative, which began in 2012, has already engaged over 18 million participants and has successfully sent out more than 6,000 real-time earthquake alerts.

Using the accelerometer on smartphones, the Earthquake Network app can detect earthquake-induced shaking in real time. This allows for the swift dissemination of alerts to all smartphones within the affected area, enabling users to take cover before the damaging waves of the earthquake reach them. Notably, in many seismic countries, Earthquake Network is currently the sole public alert system available.

Furthermore, the project has also gained the support of the University of Bergamo and the European Commission, positioning it as a vital tool in developing new seismic risk mitigation systems for Europe.
