The East Bay Center for the Blind is a grassroots nonprofit and membership organization established in 1939 to support people who are blind or have low vision. Based in the East Bay, the Center serves a diverse community, with particular attention to individual needs and people underserved by traditional agencies. Its member-led approach emphasizes mutual support, independence, confidence, dignity, and personal growth in a welcoming, nonjudgmental environment. Members and nonmembers are welcome to join classes, meetings, and events.
The Center offers free, learn-at-home Braille instruction, from basic reading and writing to courses covering different Braille codes, with audio guidance, workbooks, online webinars, and some individual instruction. Its services also include assistive technology training tailored to participantsโ needs, including computer accessibility, JAWS screen-reader use, iPhone skills, Braille displays, and accessible devices. Classes and activities include meditation and social opportunities, while a support group offers space to share experiences and encouragement. The Center also provides computer technical support, Braille resources, and a downloadable cookbook.
