About Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site
Eastern State Penitentiary, once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, now stands in haunting ruins, a world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. This historic site is known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, being the world's first true penitentiary designed to inspire true regret in prisoners. Over its long history, it housed nearly 85,000 people, including notorious figures like Slick Willie Sutton and Scarface Al Capone.
Located at 22nd Street and Fairmount Avenue, just blocks away from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Eastern State Penitentiary offers daytime tours from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Admission includes an audio tour narrated by actor Steve Buscemi, guide-led tours, hands-on history experiences, artist installations, and award-winning exhibits. As a charitable nonprofit organization, Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site interprets the legacy of American criminal justice reform within its long-abandoned cellblocks and aims to engage visitors in a dialogue about criminal justice.
